Colleague stories

We believe that people make the difference. That’s why we give our colleagues three key things: a space to belong and feel valued, a home to thrive and grow, and a place to make a difference. But don’t just take our word for it. Hear from some of our colleagues as they explain why they love working here.

Inclusion and diversity

We want you to bring your unique and valuable perspectives to every conversation and challenge. In return, our inclusive culture will help you show up in a way that inspires you and makes you feel valued.

And it’s not just something we say - we achieved the Inclusive Employers Gold accreditation in 2023, showing our commitment to inclusion and diversity.

Our colleagues help us to lead the way when it comes to creating a Society where everyone belongs.

Our five colleague-led forums work together, are open to all colleagues and are supported by our committed Inclusion & Diversity team.

  • DiverseAbility
  • Ethnicity & Cultural Heritage
  • Gender Equality
  • LGBTQ+
  • Wellbeing

You bring the can-do attitude, enthusiasm and commitment and we’ll help you thrive and grow. We’ll listen to your ideas and embrace your enthusiasm. From training and development opportunities, to clear goals to help you achieve, we’ll help you get where you want to go.

Your wellbeing is important, and it matters to us, too. Whether it’s Mental Health First Aiders or Menopause Champions, we’ll support you so you can thrive - in and out of work.

Charity & Community

Because we’re a mutual, we know the importance of giving back. That’s why we’re supporting communities by providing funding, volunteering and in-kind support to a range of charities and community groups.

And what’s more, with 14 paid hours to volunteer for every colleague each year, there’s loads of opportunities to get involved.

One in three young people leaving the care system experience homelessness within two years. That’s why we’re proud to partner with Barnardo’s to provide crucial support to young people transitioning out of care. We’re aiming to raise at least £300,000 for their work supporting care leavers over the next three years.

We’ve also launched a partnership with Become, the national charity for care-experienced children and young people, who are creating a tailored training programme on how to manage a successful tenancy, from understanding rights and responsibilities to managing money and staying safe.

Our charitable foundation awards grants to charities supporting people in need of a safe and secure home, and colleagues have the chance to nominate good causes and be involved in the selection process.

For every hour you volunteer we reward you with a £10 donation to give to a charity of your choice, boosting your fundraising efforts. Plus, we organise a busy programme of fundraising activities from bake sales to sponsored walks.
